What is the difference between enhancement & correction services?

Paint enhancement is designed to boost gloss and depth of colour, but does not address clear coat scratches and swirl marks. A paint correction service will remove or minimise the appearance of clear coat defects which are otherwise highly visibile under direct light. Depending on the severity of the defects, either a single-stage, two-stage or multi-stage paint correction may be required to achieve the desired finish. If you’re unsure what your vehicle needs, we can advise on the best option to suit your budget and requirements.

West Yorkshire’s Trusted Machine Polishing Specialists

“Gleem Services arrived at the time agreed, very friendly and professional. Sean was very knowledgeable and even advised services that I had booked weren’t needed, saving me money (shows that he is interested in creating long term clients, than one of customers). Car was amazing when it was finished inside and out – enough for the neighbours to comment what a great job had been done.”

My car is my pride and joy and whilst it is not the most glamorous of cars or the “poshes” it is absolutely paramount that it looks as good as it can so I was very nervous at the idea of handing it over to a detailer. Well my worries were absolutely unnecessary. Sean at Gleem is an absolute gem and a credit to detailers everywhere. I can’t thank Sean enough and from here onwards I will be returning everytime I need detailing work.

What causes scratches and swirl marks?

Clear coat defects such as scratches and swirl marks are typically caused by poor wash technique. This can include using automatic or roadside car wash stations, not pre-washing the paintwork, or using abrasive tools such as sponges, brushes, bath towels, chamois leather and squeegees. This causes the clear coat to look dull, and under direct light can look like spider-webbing or haziness in the finish. Machine polishing services are designed to remove or minimise these defects and produce a glossy, consistent finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you’ll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about machine polishing. If you’re looking to find out more about a paint correction or enhancement service for your vehicle, please don’t hesitate to get in touch to see how we can help enhance and protect your pride and joy.

Does machine polishing remove swirl marks?

Machine polishing removes and minimises the appearance of clear coat swirl marks, depending on their severity. The polishing process flattens the clear coat, allowing it to reflect light more evenly and produces a glossier finish with more depth of colour. For light swirls, a single-stage machine polish is typically suitable. However, for deeper swirl marks and scratches, we advise either a two-stage or three-stage paint correction service for the best results.

How does machine polishing work?

Machine polishing works by removing a thin layer of clear coat paint in order to remove defects and reveal a fresh, flatter surface. This is a controlled form of abrasion used to carefully remove the least amount of paint possible in order to enhance the finish. Read this guide to learn more about machine polishing and how it works.

What are the benefits of machine polishing?

The benefits of machine polishing include:

  • Removal and minimisation of clear coat scratches and swirl marks, resulting in increased clarity.
  • Boost to the gloss and depth of colour of the paintwork.
  • Prepares the surface for high-quality protection such as a ceramic coating.

What is the difference between a single-stage and two-stage paint correction?

When performing the paint correction process, it’s important to determine how many stages are required to achieve the desired finish.

A two-stage paint correction will achieve a better finish compared to a single-stage paint correction. This is because a more abrasive first stage can be used to cut more defects out, whilst the second stage can then be used to refine the finish to achieve more gloss. When performing a single-stage paint correction, the balance needs to be made between defect removal, and maintaining gloss and clarity.

A heavy abrasive stage will cut more defects, but can introduce some haze into the finish. This is fine if a second step is being performed to refine the finish and remove the haze. However, if only a single-stage is being performed, then the abrasion can’t be as aggressive as this will sacrifice the clarity and gloss.

We can advise on the best course of action on your vehicle to achieve the desired finish within your budget.

What paint correction packages do you offer?

In addition to our paint enhancement service, we offer three different paint correction packages to suit different budgets and requirements.

  • Single-stage correction: This service is ideal for removing light marring and swirl marks caused by bird droppings, tree sap, or poor wash techniques.
  • Two-stage correction: Designed for vehicles needing a deeper restoration. Perfect cars with for more noticeable scratches or light swirl marks.
  • Multi-stage correction: For vehicles with heavier swirl marks, scratches, this service provides the ultimate finish.

What is the difference between polishing and waxing?

Polishing is an abrasive process used to remove clear coat defects and does not offer any protection. Waxing on the other hand is non-abrasive and is instead just used to protect the paint after polishing. Hence, waxes and polishes are not the same thing.

What is the difference between hand polishing and machine polishing?

Hand polishing and machine polishing are both designed to improve the finish, however the process and effectiveness varies considerably. Machine polishing is significantly more effective at removing clear coat defects, and is more efficient compared to hand polishing. However, machine polishing also requires a lot more skill and equipment. The finish that can be achieved with hand polishing is limited, but it is much more suitable for beginners.

What equipment is needed for machine polishing?

Specialist equipment is needed to perform paint correction safely and effectively. Here’s a list of the key equipment and tools involved:

  • Machine polisher – e.g. rotary, dual-action or forced rotation.
  • Polishing pads – made from foam, microfibre or wool.
  • Polishes and compounds – abrasive liquids which are applied to the pad.
  • Paint depth gauge – used to asses the paint thickness so it can be safely polished.
  • Inspection lights – used to assess defects and their removal.

How is a car prepared for machine polishing?

Preparing a car for machine polishing is an extensive process. The preparation stages are vital in order to remove embedded contamination in the clear coat, which could otherwise be picked up by the machine polisher and actually cause more defects rather than remove them. Here’s a summary of the steps involved:

  • The car is thoroughly cleaned using safe wash techniques.
  • Iron and tar removal sprays are used to chemically decontaminate the paint.
  • A clay bar is used to physically decontaminate the paint and remove any remaining bonded contamination.
  • The car is dried and then assessed using a paint depth gauge and inspection lights.
  • Plastic and rubber trim areas are taped off so they are not stained by the polishing liquid.

How long does paint correction take?

Paint correction can take anywhere from 2-5 days including the preparation process and depending on the level of polishing required e.g. single-stage vs multi-stage correction.

What happens after machine polishing?

After a car is machine polished it then must be protected to lock in the finish. There are several options including sealants, waxes, ceramic coatings and paint protection film (PPF).

Do new cars need machine polishing?

New cars need machine polishing in almost all cases. This is because brand-new cars will have clear coat defects including scratches, swirls and sanding marks which are either inflicted at the dealership when the car is prepped for collection, or at the factory after painting. Machine polishing addresses these clear coat imperfections, producing a finish which actually looks brand-new.
