What is a Ceramic Coating?
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that comes in a small glass bottle. When applied to a surface and left to cure, it forms an invisible shield. A ceramic coated surface feels slick and hydrophobic, helping to keep the car cleaner between washes and make maintenance easier. Ceramic coatings can be applied to a variety of automotive surfaces including paint, glass, trim, and alloy wheels. Professional-grade ceramic coatings can last for up to 10-years on a car’s paintwork.

“My car is my pride and joy and whilst it is not the most glamorous of cars or the “poshest” it is absolutely paramount that it looks as good as it can so I was very nervous at the idea of handing it over to a detailer. Well my worries were absolutely unnecessary. Sean at Gleem is an absolute gem and a credit to detailers everywhere. I can’t thank Sean enough and from here onwards I will be returning everytime I need detailing work.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Below you’ll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about ceramic coatings. If you’re looking to find out more about a ceramic coating for your vehicle, please don’t hesitate to get in touch to see how we can help enhance and protect your pride and joy.
Do new cars need ceramic coating?
New cars will greatly benefit from ceramic coatings as they can help to maintain the “newness”. By locking in the finish and protecting it from the environment, it will stay looking fresh and glossy for much longer compared to uncoated paint. It can also help to improve the resale value and desirability when it comes to selling the car.
How long do ceramic coatings last?
Ceramic coatings can last anywhere from 1-10 years depending on the specific coating that was applied. Professional-level ceramic coatings can only be purchased by certified installers, and provide the longest lasting protection.
How do you clean a ceramic coated car?
Ceramic coated cars are significantly easier to wash compared to uncoated vehicles due to the slick and hydrophobic properties of the coating. However, there are some important things to keep in mind:
- Never take a ceramic coated car through an automatic car wash, and don’t use roadside hand car washing stations. These will scratch and degrade the coating.
- Use safe wash techniques to minimise the risk of inflicting swirl marks. For example, always pre-wash the car with snow foam, and use high-quality microfibre wash mitts along with the two-bucket wash method to contact-clean the car.
- Dry the car using plush microfibre towels, or even better a car dryer for a contact-free method.
- Wash a ceramic coated car every couple of weeks and no less than once per month in order to prevent it from getting clogged with environmental contamination.
- Never use a sponge or brush to wash a ceramic coated car. Also never use chamois leather, bath towels, or a squeegee to dry the vehicle. These tools will cause scratches and marring.
- Use high-quality car detailing shampoo which is free from waxes which will clog the coating. Do not use household products e.g. dish soap, to clean the car.
- Do not use a clay bar (or synthetic clay mitts) and do not polish a ceramic coating.
How are ceramic coatings applied?
Ceramic coatings come in small glass bottles with drop tops. The liquid is drizzled onto an applicator (typically made from suede or microfibre) and spread across a small section of the panel. The coating is then left to bond for around 15-60 seconds (depending on the specific coating being applied). After this time has elapsed, a short-pile microfibre towel is used to remove any excess residue. A plusher microfibre towel is then used to wipe a slightly larger area to ensure there is no residue left behind. The process is then repeated for the entire vehicle. After this, the coating is left to cure indoors overnight, so it can harden before being exposed to the environment. The coating should not be washed or exposed to any chemicals for at least one week.
Do ceramic coatings prevent scratches?
Ceramic coatings are harder than conventional car paint, so can provide some light resistance against wash marring. However, ceramic coatings are not scratch-proof and will get marred and scratched by abrasion. If the coating becomes scratched, then the surface will need to be polished and coating will need to be reapplied.
Can a ceramic coating be applied over PPF?
Ceramic coatings can be applied over PPF in order to enhance the hydrophobicity and slickness. However, it’s important to choose a coating which is compatible with PPF, to allow it to adapt to changes in temperature.
Does a car need machine polishing before a ceramic coating is applied?
It is very important to polish a car before applying the ceramic coating for two reasons:
- If a coating is applied over a scratched and swirled surface, the finish will be locked in with the coating. That’s why it needs to be polished first in order to achieve a glossy finish which can then be protected by the coating.
- Polishing helps to prepare the surface and remove any previously applied protection. If this is not removed from the surface, the coating will be unable to bond properly and the installation will fail.
What is the difference between a wax and a ceramic coating?
Ceramic coatings are far superior to waxes for a variety of reasons including:
- Ceramic coatings can last for up to 10-years, whereas waxes typically only last 2-3 months.
- Ceramic coatings are harder than waxes, so shield the car significantly better from environmental contamination.
- Ceramic coatings are slicker and more hydrophobic, helping to keep the car cleaner between washes.
The drawbacks of coatings are that they’re more expensive (although when the longevity is compared this is significantly mitigated), and they’re harder to apply. This is why it’s highly recommended to have a coating professionally applied, to avoid installation issues such as high-spots and poor adhesion. Waxes are much easier to apply, so are a good choice for enthusiasts looking after their cars on a driveway.
How do you remove a ceramic coating?
Ceramic coatings bond strongly to the surface, so cannot be removed using chemicals. Instead, abrasion in the form of machine polishing, is required in order to fully remove a coating.
Can ceramic coatings only be applied by professional detailers?
It is possible to apply a ceramic coating at home, however if you’re looking for the best performance, finish and durability, then it’s highly advisable to choose a professional. The main benefits of having a coating applied professionally are:
- Certified ceramic coating installers have access to the best coatings in the industry. These coatings last longer and perform better than consumer-level alternatives.
- Professional coating installation happens in a controlled, indoor environment. This ensures the best finish is achieved, and that the coating bonds to the surface properly.
- Professional detailers are trained and experienced in both machine polishing and coating application, resulting in a better finish.
