What is PPF?
Paint protection film (PPF) is a transparent polyurethane film which can be applied over the paintwork to protect it against environmental contamination, stone chips, and light scratches. It offers far better protection against abrasion compared to a ceramic coating, and is the pinnacle of paint protection in the automotive industry. We offer the choice of full or partial coverage PPF packages to suit your budget and requirements.

My car is my pride and joy and whilst it is not the most glamorous of cars or the “poshest” it is absolutely paramount that it looks as good as it can so I was very nervous at the idea of handing it over to a detailer. Well my worries were absolutely unnecessary. Sean at Gleem is an absolute gem and a credit to detailers everywhere. I can’t thank Sean enough and from here onwards I will be returning everytime I need detailing work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Below you’ll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about paint protection film. If you’re looking to find out more about PPF for your vehicle, please don’t hesitate to get in touch to see how we can help enhance and protect your pride and joy.
Why should I choose PPF?
PPF provides the most advanced protection for your paintwork in the detailing industry. The main benefits of PPF are:
- Abrasion resistance – protects against scratches and stone chips.
- High chemical resistance – protects against road salt, bird droppings and tree sap.
- UV protection – maintains the depth of colour and gloss.
- Hydrophobic and dirt-repellent finish – to keep the car cleaner between washes.
How long does PPF last?
PPF can last upwards of 10-years. The precise longevity depends on several factors including:
- Which film was used – some films are better quality and hence more durable than others.
- How it was applied – PPF installation is a delicate process which requires a trained technician so it adheres properly.
- How it is maintained – poor maintenance (e.g. automatic car washes) will reduce the lifespan of the PPF.
Here at Gleem Services in Leeds, we are trained installers of Pyramid Car Care PPF which offers a lifetime warranty against yellowing, cracking and blistering which are not caused by accidents, scratches or intentional damage.
Can PPF be ceramic coated?
Yes, PPF can be ceramic coated in order to boost the hydrophobicity and self-cleaning characteristics. However, it is important to use the right coating which will allow the PPF to adjust to heat and humidity changes.
What is the difference between PPF and a ceramic coating?
Paint Protection Film (PPF) | Ceramic Coating |
Made from a polyurethane film which covers and shields the surface | Is a liquid polymer that cures to form a thin invisible layer to protect against chemicals |
Longevity is 10-years+ | Longevity is 2-5 years on average but can be up to 10-years |
The best level of protection the industry has to offer against stone chips and scratches | Very limited protection against abrasion |
Costs from £1500-£5000 depending on the coverage required | Typically costs £750-£1800 for the entire vehicle |
Takes 3-7 days to install | Takes 1-2 days to apply |
What PPF options do you offer?
We offer three PPF packages:
- Front-end: this includes the front bumper, bonnet, wings and headlights.
- Track-pack: this includes the front-end plus the side skirts and partial rear arch.
- Full coverage: this includes coverage of all painted surfaces and the headlights.
How do I maintain a car protected with PPF?
Maintaining a car with PPF is straight-forward as the film makes it easier to clean the exterior, however there are several things you need to keep in mind:
- A car with PPF should never be taken to a roadside or automatic car wash as this will damage the film.
- A pressure washer should not be used close to the film’s edges.
- Aggressive or caustic chemicals should not be used.
- Tar removers and other solvents should not be used near the film’s edges.
- Clay bars and synthetic clay mitts should not be used on PPF.
Will the film be visible?
When applied by a trained PPF installer, the film will be nearly invisible. The film itself is clear and has zero distortion and the edges of the panels are wrapped where possible to hide the seams.
How is PPF installed?
- The vehicle is thoroughly washed, decontaminated and machine polished.
- The make and model of the vehicle is matched to a database and the PPF sections are then printed and cut if required.
- The film is then peeled, treated and placed down on the panel.
- The film is pressed down and air bubbles are removed using a squeegee.
- Any excess film is cut and the surface is wiped down to remove any excess liquid.
- The film is then allowed to cure indoors for at least 24 hours.
The process can take anywhere from 3-7 days depending on the level of coverage required.
What happens if the PPF gets damaged?
This depends on the level of the damage. If the PPF is only lightly damaged due to a minor scratch or swirl mark, then it can be treated to heat (in a controlled manner by a professional PPF installer) and due to its self-healing properties, the mark will simply disappear. However, in the event of heavier abrasion, the affected PPF can be removed and a new piece can be reinstalled.
What is the difference between PPF and vinyl wrap?
PPF is designed to protect the vehicle, whereas vinyl wrap is designed to alter the appearance. PPF is significantly stronger and more durable often lasting 10+ years and provides protection against abrasion. Vinyl wraps don’t offer much protection and typically only last between 2-5 years.
